As Asian Heritage Month comes to a close, the UVSS recognizes the rich diversity of Asian students on our campus. May is dedicated to East and Southeast Asians, South and Southwest Asians, as well as Pacific Islanders—groups which make up a significant and integral part of our membership.
Asian, Chinese, East Asian, and those coded as East Asian have experienced violence and racial transgressions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Of this group, femmes, women, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals face disproportionate violence. Crucially, it must be noted that anti-Asian racism and prejudice has existed in so-called Canada long before COVID; the global pandemic has only exacerbated what has been ingrained within society. At a time of increased awareness of racialized violence, we cannot forget to include Asian people in our anti-racism work.
So often, narratives on the lives of BIPOC focus on tragedy, trauma, and violence, but meaningful futures and present-futures ought to be centred in joy. BIPOC should not have to be resilient, brave, or strong, nor should they be put in violent situations in order to be protected by others. We look towards realities in which BIPOC have the freedom to be soft and gentle, joyful and playful.
As we return to campus, we stand in solidarity with all those affected regarding issues of mental, physical, financial, and social well-being, as well as safety and accessibility.
The UVSS has compiled a BIPOC Support Hub, which hosts a list of available resources which may be helpful for BIPOC students. We are actively working on improving and expanding these resources to implement specific supports for students affected by anti-Asian discrimination.
If you need mental health supports immediately, there are available resources such UVic’s Student Wellness Centre (which offers counselling and medical resources) and SupportConnect (a phone-in and online mental health support service where students can request BIPOC counsellors). Please see our ReThink Mental Health page for more info.
