Advocating for more frequent, affordable transit for you, to get wherever you want to go.

Make Transit Work (MTW) drives initiatives for more frequent, more affordable, and extended service by applying pressure on the Victoria Regional Transit Commission and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Transit is the way forward. Using transit tackles local, provincial, and national climate targets; promotes dense urban development; and supports community-centered economic growth. MTW partners with Camosun College Students’ Society and Unifor Local 33, the Greater Victoria bus drivers’ union, to Make Transit Work for you.

We Love Transit!

Here at the UVSS, we understand the positive impacts using transit can have on our community and world. Not only do effective transit systems reduce transportation emissions, but they also promote equity through accessibility to all the beautiful spaces in our city and on our island. This is why we advocate for the return of route 76, so students can connect with the mainland; for more frequent and affordable interregional transit services, so you can discover the breathtaking scenes on Vancouver Island; and for fare-free transit, so you and your friends and family can get where you need to go without worrying about how much it will cost you.

OUR GOALS

1. Return Route 76

  • Consult with Camosun on the VRTC seat
  • Pressure VRTC to reinstate Route 76
  • Run a secondary petition to demonstrate support

2. Fare-free Transit

  • Create a network of community councils that support fare-free transit
  • Establish a letter-writing campaign that sends 200 letters to VRTC/MoTI
  • Lobby Provincial Government
  • Lobby VRTC

Community Associations, sometimes called Residents Associations, are non-profit community organizations where residents of neighbourhoods can come together to make change. Renters, and especially students, are often underrepresented in these organizations. Email campaigns@uvss.ca to get involved in your local residents association!

With 13 different municipalities in Greater Victoria, and various neighbourhoods and Community Associations within each one of those, it can be hard to know which neighbourhood you’re in or how to get involved. This map is guide you to figuring out which local Community Association you belong to. Please get in touch if you have any further questions!
