Health & Dental Plan

Established by student referenda, the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) Health & Dental Plan is extended health and dental coverage designed specifically for students to cover expenses not covered by the Medical Services Plan for BC residents and other basic health-care programs.

WHO IS COVERED?

Students who are members of the UVSS and who are registered in at least 3.0 credits of designated on-campus classes in September or January, including co-op and distance students, are automatically covered by the UVSS Health & Dental Plan.

WHAT IS COVERED?

Among other benefits, the Plan covers:

  • up to 80% for prescription drugs (including oral contraceptives) and vaccinations;
  • 80% for health practitioners (psychologists, massage therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, etc.);
  • vision care (over $325 for eye exams, eyeglasses, contact lenses, laser eye surgery);
  • dental care ($850 for checkups, cleanings, fillings, extractions, endodontics, periodontics, etc);
  • travel health coverage ($5,000,000 per incident, 120 days per trip), trip cancellation and trip interruption in the event of a medical emergency.

HOW DO I OPT OUT?

If you are a student with alternate extended health and dental coverage, you may opt out online at ihaveaplan.ca. Opt-outs can only be processed within the change of coverage period, and only applies to that same school year (you will need to opt-out each year if your alternate health and dental coverage extends beyond that year). To opt-out please follow these steps:

1. Ensure you are within the change of coverage period

a. If you start school in September, the Change-of-Coverage Period is from Aug. 22, 2015 – Sept 22, 2015
b. If you start school in January, the Change-of-Coverage Period is from Dec.22, 2015 – Jan.22, 2016

2. Ensure you have the proper documentation:

a. Proof of alternate coverage
Your document must indicate your name, name of the insurance company, policy number, and whether coverage is for health and/or dental

3. Go to ihaveaplan.ca and enter “University of Victoria Students’ Society”
4. Under the “Coverage” section, select “Opt-Outs”
5. Select “Opt-Out Now” and follow the on-screen instructions for opting out.

No opt-outs or enrollments can be processed after the deadline, unless you can demonstrate legitimate grounds for missing the opt-out deadline. In this case you may appeal the charges by submitting an appeal form. Please note, that appeals are only granted under exceptional circumstances and will only be accepted within the year they were charged.

HOW DO I OPT IN?

If you are not automatically enrolled in the UVSS Health and Dental Plan and wish to enroll yourself, you may opt in at ihaveaplan.ca. Students on the plan may also choose to opt in their family members at ihaveaplan.ca. Opt ins can only be processed within the change of coverage period.

Current opt-in fees are:

September enrollments – $144 Health and $144 Dental
January enrollments – $96 Health and $96 Dental

Change of coverage periods:

August 22, 2014 – September 22, 2015
December 22, 2015 –January 22, 2016 (only for new January students)

APPEALS

If you’ve missed the opt out deadline you may pick up an appeal form at the SUB Info Booth or download here: HealthAppealWinter 2015.

Please note however, that appeals are normally only granted under exceptional circumstances.

All appeals must include your proof of alternative coverage. Filing an appeal does not guarantee an opt out.

Drop off your completed appeals form at the SUB Info Booth or email the form (and supporting documents) to ttan@uvic.ca.

WHAT IF I’M NOT AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT?

Graduate students are represented by the Graduate Students’ Society (GSS) and not enrolled in the UVSS Health and Dental Plan. Graduate students can access more information about their plan at gss.uvic.ca

Year 3 and 4 Island Medical Program students are not automatically covered by the UVSS Health and Dental Plan but have the option of enrolling at ihaveaplan.ca

HOW CAN I SAVE MORE?

You can further enhance your benefits by visiting health professionals who are members of the Dental, Vision, Doctor, Psychology, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy or Massage Therapy Networks. You are covered for the insured portion regardless of the health professional you choose. By consulting a Network member, you will get additional coverage.
