If you have alternate extended health and dental coverage you can appeal if you’ve missed the August 22nd to September 22nd opt-out period. An appeal does not guarantee an opt-out, and should not be used as a primary method of opting out. The form can be found here.
Health & Dental Plan 2017-2018
Established by student referenda, the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) Health & Dental Plan is extended health and dental coverage designed specifically for students to cover expenses not covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP) for BC residents and other basic health-care programs.
Undergraduate students who are members of the UVSS and who are registered in at least 3 units of classes in September or January, and co-op students, are automatically covered by the UVSS Health & Dental Plan.
Among other benefits, the Plan covers:
-Up to 80% for prescription drugs (including oral contraceptives) under the BC Fair Pharmacare formulary
-Up to 80% per visit to psychologists
-$40 per visit to paramedical practitioners (massage therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, etc.)
-Vision care (Over $300 for eye exams, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and laser eye surgery)
-Dental care (up to $750 for checkups, cleanings, fillings, extractions, endodontics, periodontics, etc.)
-Travel health coverage ($5,000,000 per incident, 120 days per trip), trip cancellation and trip interruption in the event of a medical emergency
How Much does it Cost?
The total cost of the plan is $288.00 for students starting in September ($144.00 for Health coverage and $144.00 for Dental coverage). The policy year is from Sept. 1, 2017 to Aug. 31, 2018. Students beginning in January 2018 will be assessed $192.00 for coverage from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2018. The cost of the plan is automatically included in your tuition and other fees.
Can I Change my Coverage?
If you are covered by another extended health and/or dental plan (e.g. a parent’s or spouse’s employee plan), you can combine both plans to maximize your overall coverage and reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs.
Alternatively, if you have other equivalent coverage, you can opt out of the health portion, the dental portion, or the plan in its entirety during the Change-of-Coverage Period from Aug. 22 – Sept. 22, 2017 for 1st Term students, and from Dec. 22, 2017 – Jan. 22, 2018 for 2nd Term students. You will receive a credit to your student account for the amount of the plan.
If you are eligible, the Change-of-Coverage Period is also when you can enrol yourself and your spouse and/or dependent children. Only new 2nd Term students can enrol themselves and their spouse and/or dependent children between Dec. 22, 2017 – Jan. 22, 2018 for coverage from Jan. 1 – Aug. 31, 2018.
How Can I Save More?
You can further enhance your benefits by visiting health professionals who are members of the Dental, Vision, Psychology, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, or Massage Therapy Networks. You are covered for the insured portion regardless of the health professional you choose. By consulting a Network member, you will get additional coverage. For example, you can talk to a licensed psychologist from the comfort of your own home and save money through the Online Psychology Network. Visit www.studentcare.ca/talkitout to discover even more mental health resources for UVSS members.
What if I’m not an undergraduate student?
Graduate students are represented by the Graduate Students’ Society (GSS) and not enrolled in the UVSS Health and Dental Plan. Graduate students can access more information about their plan at gss.uvic.ca.
Year 3 and 4 Island Medical Program students are not automatically covered by the UVSS Health & Dental Plan but have the option of enrolling at ihaveaplan.ca.
